The treatments of any kind of psychological disability require special care and attention to the exact mental conditions of the patients. Unlike the treatments of the physical ailments that involve medical testing and surgeries, the psychiatrists need to handle any case of psychological problem with much more emotional attachment, taking the individual likings and preferences of the patients in consideration.

Pet Therapy

The methods applied in curing a patient of any particular psychological problem is unique in its own way, i.e. it may not be similar to the treatment of another patient. Based on the comprehensive researches on this specific branch of medical science, several techniques have been discovered using which more than a few patients have been brought back to normal mental health. Among these techniques, pet therapy or animal assisted therapy is an important one. This therapy can be applicable to those who love to be around their favorite animals or pets. Since the first and foremost aim of any psychological treatment is to provide mental comfort to the patient, the doctors make effective use of this bond of mutual love and companionship in alleviating the mental discomforts of the patient.

Procedure

If it has been noticed that a patient of a particular psychological illness responds more positively when his/her pet is around him/her than when he/she is surrounded by his/her family members or near ones, the doctors immediately come to the conclusion that the person is in need of an animal assisted therapy. Special arrangements are made for the patient so that the animal can always be in close proximity to its emotionally disturbed owner.

Common Syndromes

The problems for which normally this pet therapy is prescribed are:
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Social phobia
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Cognitive decline

Legality

Quite a few places are there where the entry of animals is prohibited. The service animal letter is the thing that enables the patients undergoing pet therapy to carry their animals along with them in wherever they go. As the animals used in this therapy are called Emotional Support Animals or ESAs, it means that they are providing a particular service for a specific medical reason. Because of that, neither the animal nor the handler can be disallowed from entering in the cabin of an airplane or any other vehicle of public transport, or any public housing apartment. The Air Carrier Access Act of 1986 and the Fair Housing Amendment Act of 1988 preserve the rights of the ESAs and their owners.

Utility

The aforementioned letter is the only legal document that bears the proof of the identity of an Emotional Support Animal. A service animal can travel or lodge anywhere with its owner with the help of this letter.

Availability

It should be remembered here that only a certified doctor has the authority to provide the ESA letter to a patient of any psychological disability. Any other mode of identification of the animal will not be granted legally unless it has the sign and seal of a licensed psychiatrist.

We take pride in declaring that our renowned psychological clinic is one among those very few institutions in the USA that help people in getting the ESA letters. After making a thorough diagnosis of the mental health of each patient, our doctors recommend the pet therapy. Following that, we proceed to providing the patient with all the documents bearing each and every detail of his/her ailment and the identity information of the animal assisting him/her. Visit our official web pages to get the additional details.
